Volunteers Wanted: Become a Virtual Mentor to Area Students

Questions remain about how exactly local public school are going to re-open, but instruction will be delivered, and you can make a difference in the life of a student in our local schools by becoming a FISH Mentor.

JABA’s Friends in School Helping (FISH) Program trains adult volunteers to mentor students, helping boost their confidence and success. Mentors commit to at least one hour per week for the school year.

Volunteers will be trained and mentor students using the Zoom online platform. So you can do this without leaving your home! Don't worry, you'll have training and support in using the Zoom platform, and support from JABA, parents, and teachers throughout the school year.

Questions? Contact JABA's Volunteer Services Coordinator, Winter Broadhurst, at at wbroadhurst@jabacares.org or learn more about the FISH program and submit a volunteer application by visiting www.jabacares.org/fish

Humor: JABA Volunteer has priceless response when submitting his hours!

When JABA's Volunteer Coordinator asked our JABA volunteers to submit their most recent volunteer hours, volunteer Steve Sargeant's response was priceless! We feel ya, Steve.

Hello! Here are my numbers for April:

Weight gained: too damn much

Alcohol consumed: not enough

Still married: barely

Dog still loves me: maybe

Running out of Netflix choices: happened weeks ago

Now on to my absolutely, positively totally not even close estimate of those hours when I was barely conscious and can credit toward volunteering:

R&D for JABA using Zoom: about 5.9863 hours

Combing my hair in preparation to shoot a JABA webinar: 0.0000002 hours, as I am damn near bald.

Shooting countless takes of the webinar because I can’t remember my own name, never mind the damn script: 6.3442 hours

Actually talking with clients: 8.432 hours (maybe)

Pestering Randy and Lenore with countless dumb ideas and questions about: 4.54 hours [probably more if you ask them]

So when you add it all up, take the square root as calculated by the nearest orangutan, take it to confession because you know it’s a lie, and then try to add the decimals, which you have not been able to do since you were about 6-years old, the total is…

Are you ready…

24.864329765417 hours in April

Time to put my beanie on with the propeller on top, put on my mask, put on mittens, flippers and a snorkel and pour a tall one.

Sincerely,
Steve Sargeant (at least I think)

#OAM2020: How are you Making Your Mark?

JABA wants to hear from you!

The Older American’s Month theme this year is ‘Make Your Mark.’ How are you making your mark during this time? How are you coping? What special challenges has the pandemic created for you? What kind of support do you need? How are you reaching out to others? We want to hear your stories and post them below and on social media! [We will include your name or you can choose to share your story anonymously. Just let us know.] Feel free to send an email to dmcnair@jabacares.org.

JABA Volunteers: a message from JABA CEO, Marta Keane

The theme of May’s Older Americans’ Month is ‘Make Your Mark.’ To me, you have done just that! Each of you have made your mark:

A FISH volunteer, mentoring students, supporting teachers, to help each child achieve their potential

An Insurance Counseling volunteer, providing information and assistance for Getting Started in Medicare, Medicare Part D open enrollment, or Affordable Care Act enrollment

An Ombudsman volunteer, helping the most vulnerable advocate for what they need

A Community Center or Adult Care Center volunteer, bringing joy to the members through your talents- entertaining, pet therapy, flower arranging, teaching about new ideas and hobbies, setting up for lunch, and so many other examples

A Shining Star volunteer, adding activities to a full day of preschool programming

A data entry and office volunteer, expanding our capacity to serve more by providing the support of documenting what we are doing

A Neighbor to Neighbor volunteer, supporting your neighbors through friendship, empathy, and at times with practical needs

A Nutritional Delivery Driver volunteer, ensuring that our community has access to healthy food, even when home-bound.

A CDSME volunteer, leading health and wellness classes to promote independence and self-care

A JABA Board member or Advisory Council member or Committee member, providing your expertise to set the strategic path

Each of these efforts help to promote and preserve our mission. The number of volunteers and the number of hours is overwhelming. And the commitment of showing up week after week is admirable. We know we can count on you.

As we modify our operations to keep all of you and our members safe, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the many ways that you create a sustainable community for healthy aging, and the many ways that you benefit individuals and families of all ages. We look forward to welcoming you all back when we are able to return to gathering together, and being able to thank you in person. In the meantime, I would like to share my heartfelt appreciation for all you do!"

JABA Looks to Recruit Dozens of Volunteers to Help Provide Services

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - A nonprofit in Albemarle County needs your help to continue to provide free services to thousands of seniors and kids in the area. [WATCH ON NBC29]

The Jefferson Area Board for Aging is in need of dozens of new volunteers, starting in August.

JABA offers free services, like mentoring young children and helping seniors save money on health insurance.

But, without volunteers, JABA might not be able to continue to provide the same caliber of services.

Steve Sargeant is a volunteer at JABA, but he was on the other side of the conversation just about a year ago.

“The Medicare system, whether it's the drug plan or the original Medicare, there are so many different letters and it's so overwhelming when you first look at it and say how do I apply for this?” Sargeant said. “How do I make the choice? So I needed help with navigating the system and the volunteers here - that's what they do and they're really good at it.”

Becoming a volunteer was his way of giving back.

“It's not just about saving them money,” Sargeant said. “When I look at a person's drugs they take and I look at how I might save them some money, for some of these people, it's a choice between are they gonna take these drugs or are they gonna eat."

Without people like Sargeant, JABA would not exist.

“We run on volunteers,” Randy Rodgers, JABA’s manager of community services, said. “It is a large part of who we are."

"They are the ones sitting down with people one-on-one, helping people with their Medicare insurance options,” Carleigh Showalter, JABA’s volunteer services coordinator, said. “They're the ones out in nursing homes advocating for residents’ rights. They're the ones leading our chronic disease workshops and they're out in schools working one-on-one with students providing them extra support."

Last year, JABA helped 12,000 people. And with this amount of high demand, the nonprofit needs to bring in more volunteers.

“We are looking to identify 80 new volunteers so that we can meet the demand for these services,” Showalter said.

Volunteers can work as little or as much as they want. Regardless of the number of hours put in, volunteers say they get a lot out of it.

“Clients will thank us so much, that you do such a great job - we're the ones who win on this,” Sargeant said.

Jefferson Area Board for Aging will hold an open house on Friday, June 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. See below for more information on the open house dates.

A few of JABA's volunteer programs are booming....our Insurance Counseling program offers free health insurance counseling for both Medicare and the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in Charlottesville and surrounding counties. Our FISH mentors in our public schools provide much need support for teachers and valuable guidance for students. Our Ombudsman Advocates stand up for the rights of elders in long-term care facilities, and our Chronic-Disease Self-Management Workshop co-leaders help people relieve their pain and manage their health issues.

Last year, nearly 12,000 people in our area received JABA services. In addition, 900 public school students received mentoring from 69 FISH volunteers who provided 4,850 hours of volunteer time, and 300 seniors in our rural areas (double from the year before) saved $300,000 on their Medicare subscription drug cost by visiting one of our new Mobile Insurance Counseling Units.

As you can imagine, keeping these programs going strong requires dedicated volunteers!

As we gear up for these programs in the fall, we're holding Volunteer Information Session on June 28, July 12, and August 9. We would be grateful if you could draw attention to these volunteer recruitment efforts! Thanks!

JABA Honors Volunteers at Annual Awards Ceremony

On Friday, May 3 JABA honored our volunteers at our annual awards ceremony. Highlights included a Lifetime Service Award for long-time volunteer Bob Cooper, the 2nd Annual Susan Bishop Drumm Advocacy Award going to Insurance Counseling program volunteer Joe Bernheim, and a beautiful song from Greene County Community Center manager Sandra Davis. We can’t thank our volunteers enough. Without them it would not be possible to help as many people as we do every year.
