JABA’s FISH Mentors help support students, parents, and teachers…and transform lives.

Mentors support students academically and emotionally using growth mindset techniques, encouraging children to learn. Mentors volunteer at schools with teacher/staff support or virtually with the support of parents.

FISH Mentors:

  • Improve students’ motivation, self-confidence, and socialization.

  • Assist with academic subjects.

  • Are homework helpers, play & learn partners, good listeners, and empathetic.

  • Are consistent adults from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

All volunteers are thoroughly screened with an interview process, references, and background check.

for teachers & school staff

Get support with a FISH volunteer helping students one-on-one or in small groups by hosting a mentor in your classroom, library, or after-school program. Contact us to initiate a partnership at your school or request a FISH volunteer.

for parents

Your child can thrive with mentoring that helps them grow emotionally and academically. Contact us to request FISH mentoring through Zoom or other virtual platforms after school or on weekends to build supportive relationships.

It has been so helpful having a JABA volunteer read to my students ... I cannot always give the 1:1 attention many students crave. My JABA volunteer fits this role well and students look forward to having him read a story.

My daughter’s experience with her FISH mentor has been transformative. The mentor’s guidance and support have had a positive impact on her reading skills. We are grateful to the FISH program for connecting her with such a dedicated mentor.
