Volunteer Services

Would you like to make a difference in our community? JABA can connect you to meaningful volunteer opportunities throughout our area. The choices are as varied as each individual. You can play music or help with crafts at one of our many centers, mentor a child through our FISH (Friends In School Helping) program or connect with seniors through our Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. JABA's volunteers find purpose as they offer their talents and compassion to fill vital community needs. See below for a list of immediate volunteer needs.

Some of our Immediate Volunteer Needs

Friendly Visitor to Individuals with Dementia
This innovative program is an extension of JABA's Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program to provide support to individuals with dementia and their caregiver. Socialize and engage with a person with dementia in their home while providing respite for the family caregiver. Commitment is one hour each week for 10 weeks following orientation and training, with a focus on engaging the participant in meaningful activities each week. Next Training: Friday, February 1, 2019
Medicare Counselor
Counsel Medicare beneficiaries by providing non-biased information about Medicare, supplemental plans and prescription coverage and assist individuals with comparing and enrolling in plans. No former experience required! We will train you in everything you need to know. Training dates are coming up February 28, March 7, 14 and 21, 2019.

Meal Delivery Driver
Do you enjoy driving? Help JABA provide meals to participants of our Senior Nutrition Programs in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Nelson and Greene. We are seeking a team of 5-6 volunteers who can sign on for one day/week to deliver meals on a weekday morning. Load up the JABA van at 8:30am at JABA, and finish by 12:30pm.

Student Mentor
The FISH (Friends in Schools Helping) Program is JABA's signature intergenerational program that recruits and trains volunteers 50+ to work with teachers and students in our local public schools. Commitment is one hour a week for the duration of the school year. Many mentors choose to continue with the same teacher or student for multiple years. Next Training: August 2019
Wellness Group Facilitator

Be part of changing how Central Virginia faces chronic disease! Volunteer leaders contribute their experience living well with a chronic condition to bring hope, support and education to others in the community. We will train you in the Chronic Disease Self-Management curriculum (locally known as Live Well, Virginia!) to lead six weeks of small group discussions about tools for living well.

Volunteer Ombudsman
Help protect the rights of the elderly and be a voice for those in Nursing or Assisted Living facilities. JABA is seeking empathetic, diplomatic, assertive, and skilled communicators to be Volunteer Ombudsmen. As an ombudsman, you'll work to ensure residents' rights are being protected and help residents with problems they are unable to resolve alone.
Neighbor-to-Neighbor
Award a homebound senior peace of mind and help make life more meaningful. As a JABA Neighbor-to-Neighbor Volunteer, you will be introduced to a senior in your community who has requested neighborly support such as social visits, transportation, or shopping assistance. With your help, more homebound seniors in our area will have the ability to age-in-place and engage in life in a meaningful way.
Twice is Nice Upscale Resale Store
Volunteer power keeps the doors open and registers ringing at Twice is Nice, Charlottesville's boutique-style resale store featuring men and women's designer fashions, collectible antiques and unique home decor and furnishings. Proceeds benefit Mountainside Senior Living in Crozet. Help get clothing donations ready for the sales floor or help in the gallery processing housewares and furniture donations. Most volunteers work one shift per week, and training is provided.

Keep in mind...
