JABA’s NELSON CENTER HONORS LOCAL VOLUNTEERS

Lovingston, VA --- The 44 volunteers with JABA in Nelson County can usually be found delivering meals, visiting nursing homes, doing paperwork for local agencies, or helping at one of the Nelson senior centers. On Wednesday, May 14, however, they were at JABA’s Nelson County Community Center for a spring luncheon honoring their dedication and service.

A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of a poster size check representing the monetary value of the volunteers’ combined hours by Cheryl Cooper, COO of JABA. “Your work is valuable,” said Cooper. “In dollar amounts, the US Department of Labor says that every hour of volunteer work is worth $20.08. That means that the 4,226.75 hours of volunteer time contributed by our 44 volunteers in Nelson is worth $84,873.14.”

Accepting the check on behalf of the County were Connie Brennan, Supervisor, Central District; Allen Hale, Supervisor and Vice Chairperson, East District, and Joe Dan Johnson, Supervisor, South District. Also on hand to honor the volunteers were Mary Lee Embrey and Chuck Strauss, the Nelson County appointees to the JABA Advisory Council.

Reverand James L. Rose gave the invocation, Major Al Williamson provided the music, and Saunders Brothers, Inc. donated the flower arrangements.

Something for Everyone

JABA places volunteers with a wide range of local nonprofits throughout the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, and the city of Charlottesville. Volunteers have a variety of choices, with time commitments starting from as little as a few hours a month. Volunteers who are 55 and older can be part of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) that JABA sponsors locally. JABA’s Friends in School Helping (FISH) intergenerational program matches volunteers of all ages with opportunities in public schools. Trained JABA volunteers with Volunteer Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (VICAP) provide help with insurance issues and claims, while those with JABA’s Ombudsman Program act as advocates for resident in Long-Term Care facilities.
